Autism:

In this module we leave everything that textbooks tell you behind and approach support looking from the perspective of the person we are supporting. We will explore ourselves and how it feels to experience and interact with the world differently. The course is co-produced and delivered by a person with lived experience of autism, who offers invaluable insight and advice for professionals of all experience. We discuss case studies, real life examples and attendees experiences.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand sensory processing
  • Understand difference and people’s rights to be different
  • How to reframe ‘Challenging Behaviours’ to strategies for coping with sensory challenges.
  • How to support someone to manage their environment
  • Explore challenges we may face as professionals and how we can improve our practice
  • Discuss and debate real life experience and how to apply learning to practice

Professional Boundaries:

This course encourages learners to think about their relationships and interactions with the people we are supporting.  As professionals we need to build trusting but appropriate relationships. We put case studies up to debate and use scenario exercises to explore the ‘grey area’ in between personal and professional relationships. This course has proven to shift the way staff approach work and it’s aim is to ensure a better and safer work force.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand professional boundaries and why they’re important
  • The difference between a personal and professional relationship
  • The difference between a boundary crossing and a boundary violation
  • How pushing boundaries can develop negatively, “The Slippery Slope”
  • The risks of working with vulnerable adults
  • Whistle Blowing
  • Discussion and debate to support learners to come to their own conclusions

Mapping in Social Care:

The Mapping in Social Care course helps service providers and their staff understand the care act and what role they must take in supporting adults to work on and achieve outcomes through asset based practice and accessing the community.

  • To understand what an asset based approach is.
  • To learn how to work with the people you support to plan their support and outcomes through pathways.
  • To understand what community mapping is.
  • To link in outcomes of the people we support with the community.
  • To learn how to build your own community maps for the people you support.
  • To learn how to map and track outcomes of the people you support and your organisation.

Dignity Training:

Our Dignity Training is co-produced and co-lead with Lisa Ponting, a woman with lived experience of cerebral palsy. Using the Skills for Care’s common core principles and training pack as a base we have developed this training to provide a thought provoking session on how to support people with dignity and respect.

  • To understand what the common core principles are to support dignity in social care.
  • To understand how to support people with dignity during personal care.
  • To understand how to support people with dignity in their home and within the community.
  • Gain insight into how it feels to have support from a person with lived experience.
  • Review the dignity within your service and make an action plan.
